A companion dog is one of the animals being explored for later farming and herding. In a separate review build, an Australian shepherd model walked through the engine with a strand coat of 274,971 hairs, alongside the game’s sheep and horse.
Its first import collapsed. The bone movement in its animation data arrived a hundred times too small, so the body folded in on itself. Correcting the scale let it walk. The dog model came from generated sources, and its review notes are explicit that this is not the finished dog.
Walk, trot or gallop
A related experiment proposed a rule that picks an animal’s gait from its hip height alone. It predicts a horse trots at about 2.7 m/s and gallops at about 6 m/s, close to real horses, and it showed that the sheep’s walking animations play about four times too slowly. The rule is not in the game, and neither is the dog.
