In one test world, juniper woodland covered 37.8 percent of the start area. It allowed pine and manzanita but no junipers, because no juniper model existed. A 432-triangle western juniper was built from generated juniper texture sheets, and placing it was deliberately held back until the model was actually in the game, so it could not repeat the problem of plants that are placed but never drawn.

Four juniper screenshots then turned out to show something else: the camera had wandered over to an ore deposit. The tree had been drawing all along.

Its foliage also glowed with the color of bark. Light passing through leaves takes its color from the texture, and that color had been averaged over every solid pixel, only 3.8 percent of which were leaves. The leaves now pass on leaf color. The tree’s height in the placement table was corrected to match the measured model, 4.02 m rather than 4.5 m. Whether junipers are visible at the default start has not been checked yet.
